1st annual Babe Ruth Invitational Tournament St Maarten
Honour, grace, and gratitude know no better home than in the hearts of these young athletes from the St. Maarten/ St. Martin Babe Ruth League!
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sport would like to extend words of appreciation and encouragement to the team and their coaches. The team exhibited an extremely high level of sportsmanship and integrity during the 1st annual Babe Ruth Invitational Tournament, which took place on July 6th – 11th in the Bahamas.
Babe Ruth Sint Maarten / Sint Martin won the tournament’s first match, serving a devastating blow to Aruba with 10-0. The team endured through games 2 and 3 with wins going to the USA (4 -1) and The Bahamas ( 6-2).
This did not keep the athletes down as they then went on to win games 4 against the Netherlands (5-2) and 5 against Puerto Rico (3-0). This placed them in the Championship which was set for July 10th against the USA.
Unfortunately due to a covid outbreak affecting several teams; including St. Maarten on the eve of the championship game, team St. Maarten was not allowed to play. And were not honoured with their 2nd place standing according to point standings.
This disheartened the team extremely but also motivated them to return the following year to secure the championship. The team was supported by Department of Sports – SXM and The Ministry of TEATT Sxm and delegates of both Ministries were present at the Tournament to support them while in the Bahamas.
Country St. Maarten has seen for themselves what exceptional athletes and sportsmen you are. You have done us all proud and we look forward to your continued success in the sport of Baseball and at the upcoming tournaments.
Babe Ruth is set to compete in the Baseball week this upcoming December and will commence training once the team returns.
